FORT DRUM, N.Y. – The 10th Mountain Division’s Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion held a casing ceremony Mar. 13, 2023, on Fort Drum, N.Y., in anticipation of the unit’s upcoming deployment to eastern Europe. The battalion is deploying as part of Operation European Assure, Deter, and Reinforce to serve as a deterrent to aggression towards our European allies.
A unit’s colors are highly significant and symbolize the commander of that unit. The colors go where the commander goes and must be deployed with the commander. Before the colors can deploy, they must first be cased.
“We are the most heavily deployed HHBN in the United States Army, ready to deploy, fight, and win for the nation that calls us to do so,” said Lt. Col. Peter Young, the battalion commander of the 10th MTN DIV HHBN. “Today we answer to assure our NATO partners and deter aggression against them.”
The 10th Mountain Division is the most deployed division in the entire United States Army, and its headquarters element has received five Meritorious Unit Commendations, one Valorous Unit Award, and one Joint Meritorious Unit Award for the unit’s efforts while deployed.
“True readiness is what’s ready to go now,” said Young. “Our nation will never ask us if we’re ready. They’ll expect it, and so we are ready, ready to answer our nation’s call.”
Since receiving the order to deploy, the 10th MTN DIV HHBN has ensured a ready and effective fighting force. The personnel of the battalion have achieved full accountability of over $90 million of inventoried equipment within the formation, qualified over 250 Soldiers on their assigned weapons in the space of one week, and executed the movement of essential equipment and vehicles in preparation for Operation European Assure, Deter, and Reinforce.
During the deployment, the battalion’s rear elements will be led by Maj. Daniel Bauscher, a brigade fire support officer, and Master Sgt. Heath Wells, the HHBN noncommissioned officer in charge of operations.
