II Marine Expeditionary Force Enhances its Knowledge Management
MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, NC – U.S. Marines with II Marine Expeditionary Force participated in a Knowledge Management Practitioners Course aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, March 3. The KMPC was part of a training continuum partnered with the Joint Enabling Capabilities Command, to prepare II MEF Marines with the knowledge and abilities to certify as a Joint Task Force capable headquarters later this year.
The KMPC instructed Marines how to better refine data into information and process the data into information, not only within the Marine Corps, but also in the joint force. Developing leaders proficient in the process of delivering information increases the lethality and proficiency of the MEF’s decision making process.
Service members from the JECC, headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, provided the training to II MEF staff. The JECC is a principal source of rapidly deployable joint planning, public affairs, and communications personnel to Joint Force Headquarters. Subordinate to US Transportation Command, the JECC partners regularly with functional and geographic combatant commands and brings real-world operational experience to shape the continuously evolving operational environment.
“Our Knowledge Management Practitioners Course focused on our knowledge management deliberate approach. That approach is focused on helping an organization achieve two objectives; effective decision support for the commander, and staff shared understanding in support of the mission,” explained Rhiannon Patton, a course facilitator for the Joint Enabling Capabilities Command. “We had the staff take a look at their staff processes and identify what level those processes are at and how they can be optimized.”
The course enabled the Marines to develop those staff processes between various offices and warfighting functions, such as logistics and aviation, then disseminate information faster to ensure efficient usage of time. This included a wholistic review of schedules or the battle rhythm and II MEF cross-functional teams to eliminate redundancies.
“With the Marines trained to develop efficient processes, they become critical assets to the MEF, which is working to build proficiency in becoming a certified Joint Task Force,” said 1st Lt. Max Berry, a student in the KMPC.
Gaining training as a JTF HQ allows II MEF to assume position as higher headquarters of a task force consisting of multiple armed forces in various operations; making the fast dissemination of information even more critical. By training the Marines in knowledge management, they develop the skills necessary to become an effective JTF.
