FORT CARSON, Colo. – Sgt. Victoria Baker, a Soldier assigned to the 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson Mounted Color Guard, has served in the U.S. Army for five years. She joined the FCMCG to gain more experience with horses and to represent the Army while utilizing one of her greatest passions.
Baker has been riding since her childhood, which allowed her love for horses to continue to grow.
“Working with horses and having this job is absolutely amazing because growing up I never thought I would have a job like this,” said Baker.
When Baker was growing up, she idolized women who served in the military.
In the FCMCG, Baker’s day-to-day consists of taking care of the horses. Her duty details include feeding, grooming, riding and training the horses.
“We are responsible for managing our own horses,” said Baker. “I think it's great because we get to build a relationship with the horses. If something is wrong with my horse, I’ll know immediately because I maintain him daily.”
One major role of the FCMCG is to preserve the history and traditions of the U.S. Cavalry from the late 1800s. Although during this time women didn’t have a significant presence, the FCMCG of today has women within the ranks who are important members of the team.
“I think one of the greatest things about Women's History Month is that it highlights women's successes through history," said Baker. "I feel honored to be in the Mounted Color Guard.”
