GREAT LAKES, Ill. – Zion-Benton Township High School Navy Junior Officers Reserve Training Corps (NJROTC) toured and received Warrior Toughness training at Surface Warfare Engineering Schools Command Great Lakes (SWESC GL).

SWESC GL gave training at Boatswain’s Mate “A” School USS White Hat, Engineman “C” School, Machinery Repairman “A” School and the fire, water and chemical trainers at Damage Controlman “A” School.

“We incorporate Warrior Toughness into our curriculums by always cultivating resiliency and fortitude in our students,” said Damage Controlman 1st Class Tyler A. Fulwider, a SWESC GL instructor. “There’s many different ways to deal with any casualty, as there are many variables and stressors. We have to use our best judgment, if we get mentally sidetracked we go back to our Warrior Toughness techniques, calming our breathing and collecting our thoughts in a safe time-critical manner.”

The tours are a part of ongoing engagement with local NJROTCs highlighting how Naval Education and Training Command schools are incorporating Warrior Toughness into their curriculums while the visiting organizations foster citizen development amongst their youth.

“Citizenship development instills the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility, and a sense of accomplishment,” according to Naval Service Training Command Manual 5761.1B, which governs the NJROTC program.

SWESC GL instructors taught line handling and explained maintenance on ship engines and machinery repair equipment before walking students around the damage control equipment.

What we’ve seen here is tying into the curriculum we’re teaching NJROTC cadets at school,” said retired Machinist’s Mate Master Chief Dan Hackstein, an NJROTC instructor. “This hands on experience tremendously enriches vision of our program, seeing what the U.S. Navy is about and getting hands-on experience at live trainers like USS White Hat.

Multiple upcoming tours with local NJROTC schools and other organizations are slated through the rest of 2023 through Naval Station Great Lakes at SWESC GL, Surface Combat Systems Training Command Great Lakes and Recruit Training Command training complexes.
