CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea – In an effort to strengthen the alliance at the tactical level and increase interoperability between the 2nd Infantry Division/ROK-U.S. Combined Division and Republic of Korea Forces, 2ID/RUCD successfully complete the joint training exercise, Warrior Shield.
Warrior Shield, which is a combined, defense-oriented field training exercise, was held over an 11-day period from March 11-23, and consisted of both computer-assisted exercises and real-life combat scenarios.
“This exercise validates how we build readiness and is the largest training event in six years the 2nd Infantry Division/ROK-US Combined has conducted,” said U.S. Army Col. Brandon Anderson, deputy commanding officer-maneuver.
The exercise was conducted in accordance with the ROK-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty, which was signed Oct. 1, 1953, and highlights the longstanding and enduring partnership and friendship between the two nations and their combined commitment to the defense of the ROK from any threat or adversary.
While 2ID/RUCD remains ready to “Fight Tonight” at all times, Warrior Shield integrated elements of live exercises along with constructive simulations. This was another opportunity for the division to enhance the ROK-U.S. interoperability by increasing leaders’ and staff sections’ mission essential task proficiency in mission command, wartime planning, staff processes, command and control operations, intelligence, logistics, personnel procedures, and offensive operations required for the successful defense of the ROK.
“This exercise validates the Army’s multi-domain concept. We have used our non-lethal and lethal, whether it is the A10s, AH-64s, long range precision fires, down to the Stryker’s and mortars. We put them all together with our non-lethal and have been able to provide more than one dilemma to our adversary,” said Anderson.
Warrior Shield, like any other 2ID/RUCD exercise, is planned months in advance, and is not connected to any current events. It is a routine and defense-oriented exercise and is designed to enhance readiness, protect the region, and maintain stability on the Korean peninsula.
The successful completion of this exercise has increased the division’s proficiency in select mission essential tasks, along with identifying areas to sustain, and areas of focus for subsequent training opportunities.
Concurrently happening during Warrior Shield was Freedom Shield. A defense-oriented simulated training exercise which was also supported by 2ID/RUCD.
