KILLEEN, Texas – The 62nd commanding general of III Armored Corps and Fort Hood, Lt. Gen. Sean C. Bernabe, provided updates to the local community surrounding Fort Hood March 23 during the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce Military Relations Council meeting and luncheon.

The Association of the United States Army and the Killeen chamber hosted the event, which was attended by various businesses, community members, and veterans from across Central Texas.

One of the main areas of upcoming focus for the III Armored Corps, Bernabe explained, is the Warfighter exercise occurring on the installation in April. The exercise is scenario-based, focusing on large-scale combat operations.

“This is the first exercise we get a chance to demonstrate how to apply our Army’s new doctrine; our new operational concept,” Bernabe said, speaking of Field Manual 3-0 and the concept of Multidomain Operations. “This is the first time at III Armored Corps the Army gets to demonstrate how that happens on the (simulated) battlefield.”

The exercise will include units from across III Armored Corps and from overseas. Some of those participating are elements of the 1st Calvary Division, the 1st Armored Division at Fort Bliss, Texas, and allies from the 3rd (United Kingdom) Division of the British Army.

“These are designated as multi-national exercises with a specific training objective to bring in a multi-national ally and demonstrate that we can fight together,” Bernabe said. “It’s not as easy as it sounds getting things to flow properly between our international systems, but every time we practice this we get better and better.”

Bernabe also spoke to those in attendance on his core principles as a commander, those principles he calls “The Phantom 6,” which is a play on his call sign as the III Armored Corps commander. One of those six is to “build and maintain inclusive, cohesive, and disciplined teams.”

“Why do we build teams like that? …” Bernabe posed to the crowd. “The answer is easy because teams like that win.”

Bernabe then made a promise to his Soldiers during the event. He said that he and the Army’s leaders will take care of the Army’s most vital resource, its people.

“We are going to do everything starting with caring for you and your family,” Bernabe said. “We are going to make sure the leaders you have are engaged and empathetic, and we will build a team … a team that you all will be proud to be a part of.”

The Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce Military Relations Committed puts on these events regularly in the area to connect the community to what is happening in and around Fort Hood.

“This is one of my favorite things to do. It’s a great way to make good connections,” said Roni Nail, who helped organize the event as the program manager and military relations representative for the Great Killeen Chamber of Commerce. “We love educating because a lot of people in the community might not know what goes on behind the gates, so this is a great way to bring it to them.”

A veteran herself, Nail said helping put together these events are a highlight of her job.

“It’s a personal connection for me. Any time I’m working with the military veterans, it’s a humbling feeling I guess you can say,” Nail said. “This is my favorite part of my whole job. I do a lot of things, but when it comes to the military relations council, you can say it’s my favorite.”

The event concluded as Bernabe thanked those in attendance for helping make Fort Hood and Central Texas a destination of choice for so many Soldiers and their families.
