VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia – The Navy now has 28 new coaches, thanks to the MyNavy Coaching Team, who conducted a five-day coaching master course at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, March 13-17.
The training teaches Sailors how to be a coach and leads to the Navy Enlisted Classification or Additional Qualification Designator, granting them the Level 1 Certified Navy Coach designation/title.
Sailors in the course learn how to use coach-like skills to enhance their leadership abilities and interactions with other Sailors. The students consisted of various ranks and backgrounds, from a petty officer second class to a lieutenant.
The Navy adopted the MyNavy Coaching initiative in 2021. It provides Sailors with tools and resources to utilize the key coaching skills of asking powerful, open-ended questions, using empathy, and engaging in active listening.
The team of certified coaches offered Sailors an overview of the initiative’s benefits, taught them coach-like behaviors, provided feedback on the student’s coaching skills, and gave them the confidence needed to start their journey as Navy coaches. The team also provided training on effectively using the initiative’s tools and resources.
Lt. Marissa Brownfripp, Human Resources and Training Officer at Navy Region Southwest, attended the four-hour workshop in San Diego. When she saw the message announcing the course, she jumped on the chance.
“You think you know what this is, like a new name for ‘mentorship,’ but it’s not,” she said. “It’s a mindset, and I hope more open up to receive it.”
The MyNavy Coaching team provides regular training on coach-like behaviors through both 4-hour and 2-day workshops, as well as providing continual support to Navy coaches fleetwide.
Electronics Technician (Navigation) Master Chief Clair Dopson, Chief of the Boat of USS Columbus (SSN 762), was one of the course instructors.
“I think my biggest takeaway from assisting in teaching this course is that our Navy leaders as a whole are ready to learn these skills,” he said. “They understand there is a need to develop their Sailors and invest in their growth. Coaching is very different from mentoring, and with the skills they learned this week, along with some practice, they will see amazing returns for their Sailors: Increased quality of life and better results.”
MyNavy Coaching is part of the Talent Management Task Force, led by Rear Adm. Michael Schwerin. TMTF ensures the Navy attracts, develops, trains, and retains top talent. The end state is effective Sailor development to retain the best and fully qualified Sailors employed in the right assignments to maximize the Navy’s warfighting effectiveness.
