FORT HOOD, Texas -- Isabelle Jundi, a 14-year-old high school freshman from Killeen proudly represented her community as a participant in the 2023 Texas Military Youth of the Year competition held last month in Austin.

Jundi is a dedicated youth leader and volunteers at the Bronco Youth Center, which she has attended since childhood. Her passion for helping others and commitment to make a difference in her community has made her an invaluable asset to the youth center.

“Isabel is one that loves people,” said Miriam Washington, Bronco Youth Center facility director and Military Youth of the Year advisor for Fort Hood. “She specifically loves the youth struggling with different things.”

The annual recognition program is organized by the Boys & Girls Club of America, which acknowledges military youth’s volunteerism, leadership and communication skills. The competition included an application packet, four essays and an interview process.

At the local level, Jundi first competed within the Bronco Youth Center. She then advanced to the Fort Hood competition, which includes nominees from each of the other youth centers on Fort Hood that are part of the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare & Recreation’s Child and Youth Services.

According to Washington, Jundi’s dependable nature stems from her kind and compassionate demeanor, which has made her a respected figure at the Bronco Youth Center. Jundi’s willingness to listen and support those in need has earned her admiration and respect from her peers and the staff. Washington also noted that Jundi has become a big sister, mentoring the younger children at the center.

“She’s all around when it comes to being a youth. So she’s one that you can depend on,” Washington said.

Jundi’s family has a strong history of military service and giving back. For Jundi, this legacy of giving back began even before she was born, as she came into the world on the military base of Fort Hood.

“I was born on Fort Hood,” said Jundi. “My grandpa, uncle, and dad were all military.”

Jundi is an avid volunteer who is passionate about making a positive impact in her community. She derives immense joy from lending a listening ear and offering guidance to those who may be struggling. Her compassionate nature makes her a valuable asset to any initiative focused on helping others. Among her favorite activities is engaging in meaningful conversations with individuals and empowering them to share their feelings and seek support when necessary.

“I’m one of the people that ask do you need to talk,” Jundi said. “We can talk about it I’ll let them know; they have somebody to connect with.”

Jundi gave a speech just before Lt. Gen. Sean C. Bernabe, the commanding general of the III Armored Corps and Fort Hood, signed a proclamation to launch the awareness campaign for National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April on March 30.

Jundi expressed a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation for the opportunity to recite the poem during the proclamation, emphasizing that it was a great honor and privilege for her. She said she look forward to representing Fort Hood as the Texas Military Youth of the Year.
