The 147th Field Hospital (FH) is a relatively new command, established after a redesignation from the 47th Combat Support Hospital. The command was activated under the new 29th Hospital Center during a ceremony on Sept. 10, 2021, at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

“This ceremony marks the closure of one chapter and the initiation of another for the storied 47th CSH as it becomes the 147th Field Hospital,” said the ceremony’s host, 62nd Medical Brigade Commander Army Col. Y.R. Summons. “The activation of the 29th Hospital Center and the conversion to the 147th Field Hospital are important milestones for the Army and the Pacific. They give the commander of U.S. Army Pacific a scalable capability to support forces in the most consequential theater during the most consequential time as we deter the most consequential threat to the US.”

The 147th Field Hospital recently hosted its second blood drive since it was first activated. Soldiers from the medical brigade and other medical activities came to donate and show support, making the blood drive a success. Army Cpl. Candace Banks of the 105th Surgical Augmentation Detachment, of the 147th FH, supported the drive by contacting the Armed Services Blood Bank Center – Pacific Northwest (ASBBC-PNW) to request a blood drive. Banks was also the second Soldier to donate, and after completing her donation, she encouraged other Soldiers to participate as well.

Donating from the 56th Multi-Medical Battalion’s 153rd Blood Detachment was the Detachment Commander Army Maj. Paul Ambrose. Early in his career as a first lieutenant, he was assigned to the ASBBC-PNW. The ASBBC-PNW knows Ambrose well. Members of the military blood community know firsthand how important frequent blood donation is.

Army Sgt. Sage Ellis, originally from Helena, Montana and a member of the 56th MMB’s 547th Medical Company Area Support, also donated at the blood drive. Ellis is a Combat Medic and has been in the Army for almost four years. She has donated with the ASBBC-PNW four times and understands its mission. “I donate to support the troops.” Ellis shared.

The last Soldier to donate during the drive was Army Spc. Donell Warner. Donell hails from a military family, with his father, mother, and siblings all serving in the military. He works with the Public Health Activity as a Veterinary Food Inspector and has already served in the Army for three years. He has donated with the ASBP at his military occupational school, Fort Bragg, Korea, and now at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Thanks to the 105th Surgical Augmentation Detachment, 147th Field Hospital, the ASBBC-PNW was able to support its contingency requirements for those deployed.

About the Armed Services Blood Program

Since 1962, the Armed Services Blood Program is the official blood program of the United States military. Our mission is to provide quality blood products and support to military health care operations worldwide; from the battlefield to the local hospital, whenever and wherever needed. The ASBP collects, processes, stores, transports, and distributes blood products to service members, their families, retirees and veterans in peace and war. In an ASBP Enterprise view – Military Health Affairs, Defense Health Agency, Service Blood Programs and Combatant Commands – we operate under common goals, metrics, procedures, and work together to shape the future.

The ASBP is one of four organizations tasked with providing a safe blood supply to the nation. Our program also works closely with our civilian counterparts in times of need to maximize the availability of this national treasure.
