FORT HOOD, Texas – U.S. Army Chief of Staff Gen. James C. McConville visited leaders and Soldiers at Fort Hood, Texas, April 20, 2023, to tour the multinational exercise Warfighter 23-4.

Warfighter 23-4 simulates large-scale combat operations and involves tens of thousands of troops from across the globe, with the goal of enhancing lethality, allied partnerships, and interoperability. The exercise is designed to test the III Armored Corps’ ability to project combat power, and includes units from the 1st Armored Division, 1st Cavalry Division, 13th Armored Corps Sustainment Command, 36th Engineer Brigade, 75th Field Artillery Brigade, and 89th Military Police Brigade, to name some.

“We spent the last 20-plus years doing counterinsurgency, counterterrorism, and irregular warfare,” McConville said. “We're at an inflection point, and we believe the next battle–and that was seen unfold in Ukraine–is going to be large scale combat operations.”
During his visit, McConville recognized participating units within the III Armored Corps, the 1st Cavalry Division, and 3rd (United Kingdom) Division, for their professionalism and outstanding performance.

“I would say the trust between our two nations, our two militaries, and two armies is unparalleled,” said U.K. Maj. Gen. James Martin, commanding general, 3rd U.K. Div.

Roughly 1,500 soldiers and 400 vehicles from the 3rd U.K. Div. came to support the exercise.

The exercise has been building for over a year, with the III Armored Corps conducting three command post exercises leading up to the two-week long exercise.

“The warfighter has been going great,” said Brig. Gen. Sean P. Davis, commanding general, 13th ACSC, at the midway point of the warfighter April 21. “We have the challenge of sustaining III Armored Corps in large scale combat operations, and we have seen tremendous growth in our people throughout the exercise.”

Warfighter 23-4 provides a simulated scenario to the multinational force, replete with a multitude of modernized challenges that require innovative solutions before III Armored Corps, known as “America’s Hammer,” is certified to lead formations in large-scale combat operations.
