ANCHORAGE, Alaska - U.S. Air Force Col. David Wilson, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson and 673d Air Base Wing commander, hosted a public community meeting to encourage locals to utilize the safety resource iSportsman for on-base recreation Loussac Library, Anchorage, Alaska, April 17.
“Our military training ranges are critical to our readiness and projecting joint forces worldwide, but we want to utilize these ranges in the safest manner possible and as good neighbors with the public,” said Wilson.
Anchorage residents expect free-flowing access to the military land that borders their property, which can sometimes include non-fenced military training areas (TAs) used for live-fire combat operations. When not used for military operations, the TAs double as recreational areas for hiking, biking, berry picking and other outdoor activities. To recreate safely on these lands, it is paramount for recreators to check-in on the iSportsman website. In accordance with the Sikes Act, the installation commander aims to facilitate public recreation on military grounds safely.
“It’s important the public understands the inherent danger in not adhering to our training area procedures, and how trespassing can put them in danger or drastically impact our training plans,” said Wilson. “We want to encourage the use of the iSportsman program that can be accessed through the JBER Connect smartphone application.”
The iSportsman membership is a safety tool, which displays which TAs are currently available and safe for recreation. Easy-to-use features like activity tracking and real-time information make it safe and organized for all parties to coordinate proper use.
“It is important for everyone who recreates on military lands to have an iSportsman annual permit and use the JBER app,” said Joy Boston, 673d ABW community partnerships and Alaska liaison. “The website not only identifies training areas that are open for recreation, but also helps identify someone’s location [for rescue services] in the event of an accident, injury or wildlife encounter.”
