KABUL, Afghanistan — A young Afghan male was killed by an IED today in the Tanai district of Khowst province.

According to initial reports, the 16 year old boy stepped on the IED.

There were no ISAF forces involved in this incident.

Recently released data by United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan confirms the total number of civilians killed last year in Afghanistan is regrettably up by 14 percent, predominately due to the insurgents and their indiscriminate use of road side bombs and other terror tactics which claimed more than 1,630 innocent lives in 2009.

The UNAMA report specifically highlights a 28 percent decrease in the number of accidental deaths caused by ISAF in 2009 compared to 2008. UNAMA attributes this decrease in accidental casualties as a result of ISAF's increasing effort to protect the Afghan population rather than engaging the insurgents directly.
