As typhoon season approaches from June through November, Marines with Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Blaz participated in Joint Region Marianas’ typhoon exercise from April 20 – 27, 2023. This training prepared service members for typhoon season by rehearsing emergency situations and strengthening communication tactics.

A typhoon is described as a tropical cyclone with the maximum wind of 34 knots or higher that that produces strong winds and heavy rain. Typhoons are known to cause power outages and affect other utilities. They can also cause widespread damage to infrastructure, roads, and landscapes.

The exercise simulated a super typhoon heading for Guam and entailed command and control rehearsals vital to communication procedures between the military installations on Guam.

“The best thing is to exercise our ability to ensure the installation can continue its mission critical abilities and also ensure the safety of all our personnel,” said Matthew Reel, the emergency manager for MCB Camp Blaz. “It’s best to be prepared.”

The exercise included heavy weather briefs, interoperability communications with Department of Defense partners, personnel accountability procedures, and operations in a communications restricted environment. This training validated MCB Camp Blaz’s heavy weather procedures.

“I learned that given the uniqueness of the command, more communication is key for a successful exercise. Making sure everyone is on the same page and understanding what is required of them and their section,” said Gunnery Sgt. Juan V. Robledo Jr., admin chief for MCB Camp Blaz. “This safeguards all MCB Camp Blaz staff, and their families.”

With the future growth of the Marine Corps’ presence on Guam, this exercise will be incorporated as annual training for MCB Camp Blaz. Rehearsing preparedness for a typhoon improves response time and communication between units to ensure the safety of the Marines, Sailors, civilian workforce, and their families.
