LAWTON, Oklahoma (May 2, 2023)– Day one of the 2023 Fire Symposium kicked off with Brig. Gen. Shane Morgan, the acting commanding general of the Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill, at the Apache Casino in Lawton, Ok May 2.
“The Army is undergoing a once-in-a-generation transformation to develop the capability to fight and win our Nation’s wars in any domain—on land, in the air, sea, space, and cyberspace,” said Morgan. “Whether it's Field Artillery, KING OF BATTLE, or the Air Defense, FIRST TO FIRE! The fires force will lead the Army’s modernization efforts in the coming years.”
Morgan opened the conference by speaking to the importance of the Field Artillery and Air Defense Artillery, the role each of them has in Large-Scale Combat Operations, and the support of maneuver units to enable them to accomplish their missions. Morgan also emphasized the importance of the fires mission and the dangers we face if accessions continue to drop.
“People First” is more than a philosophy, it’s our # 1 priority. We must have the right people in our formations to maintain our lethality.”
Col. Mike Barefield, the acting commandant of the Field Artillery, started the afternoon with a state of the Field Artillery Branch.
“There has never been a more relevant or exciting time to be a Redleg– the state of the Field Artillery is strong, said Barefield, “The Field Artillery continues to be decisive on the modern battlefield and you only need to look at events in Europe to validate this.”
Barefield was later joined on stage by Chief Warrant Officer 5 Roland Rios, the chief warrant officer of the field artillery, and Command Sgt. Maj. Paul Fluharty, the command sergeant major of the field artillery to field questions from the attendees and viewers online.
There has never been a more relevant or exciting time to be a Redleg!
