Story by Staff Sgt. Miranda Mahoney

    386th Air Expeditionary Wing

ALI AL SALEM AIR BASE, Kuwait – She rocked back and forth on her tiptoes searching through the sea of people to find him. They spotted one another’s smiling faces in the crowd of exhausted travelers, and after months of not being together, they ran to each other in uncontainable excitement.

A few short days later, that familiar feeling of excitement crept in as Sergeant 1st Class’ Signe Li Jakobsen and Mads Petersen waited for their wedding to start at Ali Al Salem Air Base, Kuwait, May 3, 2023.

The couple are both quartermasters and have been following each other throughout their military careers ever since meeting at Non-Commissioned Officer school in Denmark, and deploying to AASAB was no different. Jakobsen was assigned to the Danish National Support Element for the last few months and Petersen took over the position as she rotated out.

Due to service commitments, the couple has spent most of the last year apart, so they decided to have their wedding during the short time they had together at AASAB.

“I think it says a lot about who we are that we want to do it this way,” said Jakobsen. “We are so passionate about our jobs, and we do it with our whole soul. It means a lot for us to be able to do it here.”

Jakobsen explained how they both take a lot of pride in serving their country, and it is an extremely important part of their relationship.

“I think it is very good that we are both in the military because we know what each other’s job is about, and we can share a lot of this life,” said Jakobsen. “We can support each other, and we can talk to each other and understand what each other are going through, like with this deployment.”

Peteresen added that because they have so many shared experiences to discuss they are constantly challenging one another.

    “We make each other better.”

The newlyweds expressed big plans for the future, but as of right now Jakobsen said they are focused on enjoying their time as a young military couple.

“We want to get life experience, and meet a lot of people from other countries and serve our nation.”
