CORPUS CHRISTI ARMY DEPOT, Texas - Corpus Christi Mayor Paulette Guajardo, was the guest speaker to 19 members of the Upward Professional Leadership Investment for Tomorrow (UPLIFT) Class 23-1 professional development course April 5.
Guajardo spoke openly to the group about leadership and described her vision of leadership and emphasized topics currently incorporated into the UPLIFT curriculum. She stressed the importance of integrity and trust to set the foundation for developing and sustaining working teams. “Leaders provide a vision and steer the team towards achieving goals and aspirations. The people you lead depend on your honesty and integrity.”
The mayor touched on the value of embracing failure and developing the resilience to bounce back from such instances to continue treading forward. While delving into some of her own leadership practices, she said, “A leader is someone serving people. When you serve people, everything will fall into place.” Guajardo also noted the value of building professional relationships and the significance of fostering them through candid collaboration.
She humbly described how she leads every day through the philosophy of servant leadership and service to others. “Communication contributes to garnering the respect of your team members. Listen to and be able to speak to many different employees. Encourage diversity of thought and foster leadership in others.”
CCAD made an indelible impact on the mayor’s life. As the daughter of a retired CCAD employee, she experienced firsthand the opportunities afforded during his time as an Army Civilian. His livelihood, as an artisan in the blade shop, allowed for a stable family life that ultimately paved the way for her future aspirations.
At America’s Aviation Depot, the UPLIFT course offers employees the opportunity to shadow a leader for a day during the six-month interactive experience. A strong emphasis on team building keeps students engaged with colleagues and mentors. The leadership strategies and concepts presented are in line with Army leader development and industry best practices.
The graduation ceremony for UPLIFT Class 23-1 is set for June 2023 at the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi Main Chapel Building 117.
