Hospital Corpsman Third Class Christopher Hardnett receives the Surgeon General's Power Award for demonstrating outstanding innovation in support of Operation Blue Pacific 2022, Feb 23.
Hardnett is attached to U.S. Naval Hospital (USNH) Guam and serves in the Preventive Medicine Department as a Preventive Medicine Technician. He was selected among a competitive group of Corpsmen to embark the United States Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) OLIVER HENRY (WPC 1140) during an expeditionary patrol mission, “Operation Blue Pacific.”
“Operation Blue Pacific” is a routine USCG multi-mission that provides maritime training and awareness. The mission enhanced USCG capabilities and allowed partners in the Indo-Pacific region to engage, share practices and build relationships.
As the very first Corpsman at USNH Guam to support a USCG mission, Hardnett provided medical coverage to 25 crew members during the underway period. He treated crew members, beyond basic first aid, that ranged from lacerations to infections and performed COVID-19 swabbing of the crew prior to entering Papua New Guinea.
“I also led a training exercise where we simulated response to an injured crew member,” said HM3 Hardnett. “It felt great to teach hands-on medical treatment actions.”
During the 43-Day voyage, Hardnett provided medical coverage in effort to promote regional stability, expand partner relationships with other branches of service, in alignment with the Surgeon General's priorities.
“This operation showed collaboration between the Navy and the Coast Guard,” said Hardnett. “We worked together, performed well and maintained readiness for the crew and members from the different forces we interacted with.”
Hardnett stated that he experienced interactions with people all around the world, but he will always remember the interactions he experienced when he arrived at Papua New Guinea.
“There was something about sharing cultural backgrounds with the locals there, this experience will always stay with me.”
