Ebbing Air National Guard Base, Fort Smith, Ark. — U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Samuel S. Janski, 188th Human Resource Advisor, retired after serving almost 30 years on May 7, 2023.

The ceremony was presided over by Col. Jeremiah S. Gentry, 188th Wing Commander.

“Almost 30 years of service to this wing. That’s rare,” said Gentry at the ceremony. “That kind of loyalty and dedication is not only to our Air Force and to our Air National Guard, but to our Wing. I can’t imagine the things you’ve seen in your time here.”

Janski joined the 188th Fighter Wing in 1993 as an Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist working on the F-16 Falcon and later the A-10 Thunderbolt weapon systems. During his tenure as an Aircraft Armament Systems Specialist, he deployed to Balad Air Base, Iraq, in June 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he served on a weapons load crew.

In 2009, Janski graduated from the United States Air Force First Sergeant Academy and began serving as the 188th Wing’s First Sergeant.

While serving as a First Sergeant, he deployed to Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, in 2012 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, where he was responsible for the welfare of more than 500 Airmen.

“When you talk about leadership and someone who has really stepped out and taken care of Airmen, thank you for making that a priority,” said Gentry. “Those two deployments and the amount of people you’ve affected in a singular deployed environment is just a microcosm of a 30-year career of taking care of Airmen.”

In 2016 Janski was selected as 188th Human Resource Advisor where he served until his retirement. His contributions in that role were honored with a Meritorious Service Medal presented at the ceremony.

“What I’ll miss the most is the relationships,” said Janski. “The weddings, events, traditions, deployments, and trainings - I will never forget the people.”

Janski's plans after his retirement include continuing to work full-time at his civilian job as manager of business analytics, traveling and spending time with family, and serving as a retired representative for the Arkansas Air National Guard in the Enlisted Association of the Arkansas National Guard (EAANG).
