National Nurses Week
FORT RILEY, Kansas– Irwin Army Community Hospital held a celebration honoring their nurses on May 5th, 2023, on Fort Riley, Kansas.
The event began as Col. Anthony Gray, the commander of IACH, and Col. Anne Kang, the deputy commander of IACH, thanked nurses for their hard work and dedication.
National Nurses Week is an annual celebration that has taken place in the United States from May 6th to May 12th since 1988. During National Nurses Week, hospitals, healthcare organizations and communities across the country hold events and ceremonies to honor and thank nurses for their hard work, dedication and commitment to patient care.
“When I think about nurses, I think about people who are nurturing, I think of people who provide unwavering dedication to duty, I also think of people who are always ready, responsive, reliable, when it comes to patient care, and they are sure resilient,” Gray stated in the “2023 Nurses Week, Who's your fav?” video posted on the IACH YouTube page.
U.S. Army Maj. Gen. John V. Meyer III, the commanding general of the 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley, also spoke at the event. He shared his experiences growing up with his mother who served as a nurse for nearly 50 years. Meyer finished his speech by thanking the nurses on behalf of Soldiers and the Fort Riley community.
Sgt. 1st Class Steven Martin, who has been practicing nursing for the military for over 20 years shared his take on military and nursing life balance.
“I don’t think some patients or some of our co-workers outside our department understand the amount of hours we put in,” said Martin, “We have to put in our wartime mission every day and do our military training, those are extra hours that we don’t get off.”
National Nurses Week is about recognizing the hard work and dedication of all nurses and showing appreciation for the critical role they play for the well-being of individuals and communities. IACH took the time to honor their nurses who serve military members, Dod civilians, retirees, and their families, on base.
Cpl.Chase Bohman, assigned to U.S. Army Medical Department Activity, IACH, is a licensed practical nurse and non-commissioned officer in charge of in-patient behavioral health. During the ceremony she too shared her experiences as a military nurse.
“What motivated me to treat people is just knowing that at the end of the day you changed someone's life,” said Bohman.
National Nurses Week also serves to remind people of the ongoing challenges that nurses face, such as staffing shortages, long hours and high levels of stress.
Fort Riley’s National Nurses Week celebration provided Soldiers with the opportunity to honor and celebrate the vital work that Fort Riley nurses do every day for servicemembers and their families.
