KABUL, Afghanistan - In an unfortunate incident this morning, an ISAF convoy fired on what appeared to be a threatening vehicle. Regrettably an Afghan civilian was killed during the incident.
We later learned that the civilian was Muhammad Yonus, the Imam of Paktia Kowt Mosque in Ud-khil District. He was initially wounded in the incident but later died of his wounds at Wazir Akbar Hospital.
"Despite all the measures that we put in place to ensure the safety of the Afghan people, regrettable incidents such as this one can occur. On behalf of ISAF I express my sincere regrets for this loss of life and convey my deepest condolences to his family," said Brig. Gen. Eric Tremblay, ISAF spokesperson.
A thorough investigation is being conducted. Appropriate action will be taken to ensure that the personnel complied with our policies designed to protect the civilian population. We constantly review these policies to provide the greatest possible protection to civilians.
While we cannot replace the loss suffered here today, compensation to the family for their loss will be in accordance with local customs.
