“Community service means creating a better environment for those who may not be able, or willing, to do it themselves,” said a member of Troop 776. “It's like leaving an area better than how you found it."
According to Boy Scouts of America community service is a task that all Boy Scouts take pride in doing. Service is one of the most important values Boy Scouts have in Scouting. The Scout Oath calls on them all to “help other people at all times.” The Scout Law says a Scout is helpful, friendly, courteous, and kind.
“Being a Boy Scout teaches young boys some of the most obvious things I see are self-confidence, and leadership skills,” said Jeremy Deagan, Troop 776 scout master. “Service projects like this help make concepts like citizenship and community less boring and more relatable.”
Troop 776 is chartered by the Staff Sgt. Robbie Miller Special Forces Association Chapter and they take the opportunities to support the Special Forces community when they can.
“As our Chartered Organization, the Staff Sgt. Robbie Miller Special Forces Association helps make sure we have a functional committee to manage the troop, and an appropriate facility to meet in,” said Jeremy Deagan, Troop 776 scout master. “These facilities can be hard to come by on post.”
Troop 776 and many of the other nearby troops are made up of Scouts in Army families. While other Scout units have a familiar community they can give back to, ours tend to move every few years. This project, and the volunteering they do at the Jingle Jog and other events, gives them a sense of connection to this post as well as others they may move to.
“There are multiple Eagle Scout Projects that have been done on post,” said Jeremy Deagan, Troop 776 scout master. “I encourage people to look for the impact these youth have made over the years here.
Every year at this time Troop 776 is invited to beautify the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) Memorial Walk. The area is kept nice, but the Scouts focus on small details, and making sure everything looks presentable for the rose laying ceremony and Memorial Day.
“Troop 776 always does a great job making our Memorial Walk perfect for the Rose Laying Ceremony and Memorial Day,” said Col. David Haskell, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne) deputy commander. “I really just want to say ‘Thank you’ on behalf of 3rd Group. The troop helped us ensure the Rose Laying Ceremony was a special moment for the Gold Star Families and all of our 3rd Group teammates.”
