    Marine Corps Installations East

Marines, Sailors and family members gathered in front of the Marine Corps Air Station New River Headquarters building to recognize and meritoriously promote one Marine to the rank of Sergeant. Cpl. Cody Lewis is not only the winner of the Marine Corps Installations East Commanding General’s Meritorious Sergeant board, but was also recognized as the MCAS New River Go-Getter for the month of May.

Lewis, a Rainelle, West Virginia native, joined the Marine Corps in 2019 as a combat engineer. Blowing stuff up is his favorite part of the job, as every combat engineer would tell you, according to Lewis. He loves breaching and running operations. He loves to train and go do things, a natural go-getter. Even though Lewis has no junior Marines in his current billet, he still seeks out people he can teach and mentor. One of the biggest outlets for his passion is contributing to Marines’ martial arts training, as an instructor for the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP), also known as a Martial Arts Instructor or MAI.

“That has become, greatly, one of the best things that I’ve wanted to do and really showed me that I like to teach Marines,” said Lewis.

Without many Marines in his shop, he teaches everywhere.

Marines and Sailors, junior enlisted and officers alike, have often found Lewis stopping by the gym eager to share his insights and contact information to help with getting their next MCMAP belt while they practice martial arts techniques.

Lewis’ competitiveness, developed while playing basketball in high school, is an asset to the work ethic and goal-oriented nature of what is expected of a meritorious sergeant and MCAS New River Go-Getter. Reflecting on his leadership skills, Lewis attributed having good mentors and being put in leadership billets to have helped him.

Now that Lewis has a third stripe to match the rank on his collar, he’s in pursuit of the responsibilities that come with having a rocker as well. Lewis is currently volunteering to serve as a Lance Corporals Seminar instructor where he continues to pass down knowledge and mentor junior Marines in addition to his normal duties and additional work as an MAI.

“I just want to help the Marine Corps as a family, so that would be the reason why I would stay in (reenlist) if I do,” said Lewis.
