FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — Soldiers from the Sabalauski Air Assault School (TSAAS) demonstrated rappelling techniques and were highlighted at the Professional Bull Riding event at the Ford Center in Evansville, In., May 28, 2023.

The six Soldiers rappeled in the middle of the event during a break in the competition where a video of rappelling was shown on the jumbotron before the demonstration. The Soldiers then rappeled down utilizing multiple techniques.

“Getting to experiment with new heights and new places to rappel is fun,” said Staff Sgt Josh Ramsey, an instructor at TSAAS and one of the six to rappel, “and getting to come out and do it in front of the public and show them our capabilities is just an amazing experience.”

After the Soldiers were finished with the demonstration, the arena of nearly 10,000 people all rose to give a standing ovation.

“We love coming out here and being asked to support a community that is a good distance away from Fort Campbell and show them our capabilities and to be able to interact with the community,” said Staff Sgt. Nolan Snider, another instructor at TSASS and the person to demonstrate the Australian rappel.

An Australian rappel is one where one descends face-first toward the ground, with the rope anchored to their waist and their feet against the surface they are rappelling on; its name comes from the origin of the technique.

“My favorite part of the event is just the support that we get from the community,” Snider continued,“ especially on Memorial Day weekend. There has been nothing but praise and support from everybody here at the event.”

Ramsey said he enjoyed getting to bring his family on Memorial Day weekend and having the chance to show them what he teaches at The Sabalauski Air Assault School on a daily basis.

“I got to show them the support my fellow Soldiers and I get outside of the Fort Campbell area,” he said. “It’s just an amazing opportunity.”
