Patrol Squadron Nine (VP-9) recently participated in the Submarine Commanders Course (SCC) in Oahu, Hawaii, designed with the goal of preparing Naval Submarine Officers to take command of a US Submarine. This two-week exercise featured three VP-9 crews and two VP-46 crews operating the P-8A Poseidon, alongside one Royal Canadian Air Force crew flying the CP-140 Aurora. The aforementioned maritime patrol squadrons were given the opportunity to execute real life Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) tactics throughout the course.
ASW is the primary mission of the P-8A Poseidon, and plays a significant role in the US Navy’s defenses. Surface ships, aircraft, submarines, and other resources are utilized to find, track, classify, and prosecute submarines. Successful ASW operations use a variety of sensors and technologies combined with effective strategies and highly trained personnel.
As a member of the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Force, the “Golden Eagles” of VP-9 take every opportunity to hone and refine their skills when it comes to ASW, and this SCC event certainly didn’t disappoint. During the exercise, airborne assets were tasked with prosecuting a US submarine to the best of their abilities while the US submarine was charged with accomplishing several objectives all while remaining undetected. Demonstrating the United States’ commitment to its partners, this exercise was also noteworthy in that it allowed for critical ASW cross training to take place between US and allied maritime forces.
Commanded by Cmdr. James J. Donchez, and based out of NAS Whidbey Island, Washington, the 279 Sailors assigned to Patrol Squadron Nine (VP-9) currently operate the P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft.
