YOKOSUKA, Japan - Onboard USS SHOUP, each division goes through an inspection period known as “Division in The Spotlight” (DITS), where the division is inspected on their uniforms, the way they carry out daily tasks, and maintenance spot-checks are verified by the triad. The Division in the Spotlight program gives each division an opportunity to demonstrate its standard of excellence. The PAO team has gathered articles to highlight the division.
S-2 is the division that never stops working! After planning for one meal, another mealtime comes and must be prepared for. They play a critical role in maintaining morale and ensuring that sailors are ready to perform their duties. Their day-to-day duties include inventories, maintaining galley equipment, preparing and serving meals for sailors, and providing customer service. They manage over $1.5 million in financial records, inventory over 900 line items and serve nutritious food to over 300 sailors daily.
On the most recent Supply Management Certification (SMC), their efforts were widely recognized across the board. They received an excellent in each category, earning them a score of 92% and an overall OUTSTANDING. SMC is one of the hardest inspections for Supply and they accomplished it with ease. “Going through DITS is tedious because we own over 150 spaces onboard”, said CS2 (SW) Bond, Andrew. Each space is expected to be fully functional. “There are minor hiccups but we always pass and strive to improve every day”, he added as CS2 takes great pride in the maintenance of these spaces. CS2 Bond sets an example for his junior sailors.
S-2’s Leading Culinary Specialist, CS1 (SW/IW) Marte, Angel and Leading Petty Officer CS1 (SW) Henry, Travis both wear many hats and contribute to the success of the Shoup. Mentoring and guiding many sailors to be their best selves. “I feel passionate about cooking and making sure that my shipmates have quality food. As a senior sailor, I find passion in motivating and making junior sailors into professionals.” Said CS1 (SW/IW) Marte, Angel.

The sacrifices of S-2’s efforts are essential in providing for sailors onboard USS Shoup and ensures that we are ready to accomplish any mission.
