NAVAL BASE SAN DIEGO (June 8, 2023) Cmdr. Chris Caraway relieved Cmdr. Joseph Bubulka, commanding officer of Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Omaha (LCS 12) Blue crew, June 8, aboard the ship moored at Naval Base San Diego.
During Bubulka’s command, Omaha completed a maintenance phase and began training, certifications, and preparations for the ship’s maiden deployment.
“I am very proud of the crew and the work we accomplished while maintaining a focus on our dedication to team work, mission readiness, lethality, and safety,” said Bubulka. “Working together, we overcame every obstacle we encountered and demonstrated how to make two challenging maintenance periods a success”.
Caraway, a native of San Diego, previously served as Omaha’s executive officer. Cmdr. Ryan Doyle, a native of Boca Raton, Florida, assumed the executive officer billet following Caraway’s assumption of command.
Omaha, named for the city of Omaha, Nebraska, previously served as the training ship for Surface Division Eleven.
Independence-variant LCS like Omaha are fast, optimally-manned, mission-tailored surface combatants that operate in near-shore and open-ocean environments, winning against 21st-century coastal threats. LCS integrate with joint, combined, manned and unmanned teams to support forward-presence, maritime security, sea control and deterrence missions around the globe.
