LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas - Pfc. Ruslan Pietra information technology specialist, 134th Cyber Security Company was called to stand in the front of a crowded room to be promoted to the rank of specialist by Col. Jeffrey Fleming exercise officer, Illinois National Guard, at the Professional Education Center in Ark., June 10, 2023.

Cpt. Benjamin Parish, commander for the 134th CSC, is proud of the strength, resilience, and tenacity that Pietra displays. Through his involvement in Cyber Shield, his willingness to explore new possibilities, and his civilian work as a systems technician, Pietra exemplifies the essence of a well-rounded and adaptable Solider.

“He’s a consummate learner who is eager to take on any technical challenge and ask questions so he can improve his skill set while exploring future opportunities,” said Parish. “He is an incredibly hard worker who always has a positive attitude and is excited to work in this field”

His interactions with fellow soldiers from different branches have also broadened his perspective and fostered valuable cross-branch collaboration.

Currently, Pietra works as systems technician for Net100, a telecommunications company, out of Chantilly, Va. In this civilian role, he has had the opportunity to travel across Virginia for various projects. The training and experience Pietra has received at Cyber Shield will apply directly to his civilian and military careers.

Cyber Shield has exposed him to a wide range of new experiences. Pietra appreciates the opportunity to learn and actively engage in hands-on experiences within the exercise.

"Right now, I just want to gain experience and see where my civilian career and my military career takes me and then go from there," said Pietra.

Cyber Shield stands as the premier cyber defense exercise within the National Guard, serving as a platform where Defensive Cyber Operations Elements and Cyber Protection Teams immerse themselves in two weeks of rigorous cybersecurity training and conduct cutting-edge cyber defense exercises in response to potential real-world incidents.
