(Portsmouth, Va.) – The atmosphere at Norfolk Naval Shipyard’s 2023 Friends and Family Day was as bright and sunny as the weather on June 3. The air was filled with the sweet aroma of funnel cakes and the cheerful sounds of children playing. This year, more than 9,000 attendees were registered to attend this morale-building event.
“I believe this event bolsters the pride and morale of our active duty members and civilian employees,” said Event Chairman Johnny Satcher. “This event is an acknowledgement that NNSY leadership recognizes their hard work, sometimes long hours and sacrifice, and appreciates their collective contribution to the defense of our country.”
“Holding this event allows our employees to bring in their friends and relatives so that they can see, firsthand, what they do on a daily basis,” said Satcher.
The festival included: a car show, live music, tours of USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), bounce houses, photo opportunities with popular film characters and local sports mascots; a shipyard history exhibit at Quarters M-1 and select tours of various NNSY shops.
Delicious food offerings were available as well, with the funnel cakes and smoked turkey legs being particularly popular options.
“This year’s Family Day was a tremendous success,” said Shipyard Commander Capt. Dianna Wolfson. “As our first post-COVID Family Day, it was great to see and speak with so many of our team members showing their pride in America’s Shipyard here with their families and friends enjoying the beautiful weather and activities. I appreciate the extensive efforts of everyone involved in supporting this great event!”
“Trying to show off our installation and work areas while taking into account the need to present a ‘fun side’ for our younger attendees takes some thought and planning,” said Satcher. “None of this can be accomplished without the help of a dedicated team of NNSY volunteers who assist in the planning and execution of NNSY’s Friends and Family Day. There were a lot of logistical challenges, but the smiles we witnessed on the day of the event make it all worthwhile.”
”There are so many people, inside and outside of the shipyard, which assisted in making this event the best that it could be,” Satcher continued. “You are all amazing! Thank you, again. Special shout out to the USS Harry S. Truman CO, XO and Public Affairs Officer, and their staff, for bending over backwards to make the carrier tours a success.”
