FORT CARSON, COLO. --- Green Berets, friends and Family gathered around to walk, run and ruck a seven-mile trek between Garrett Road and Elbert Road honoring the ones who lost their lives while serving in the military for Memorial Day in Falcon, Colorado, May 29, 2023.
On Feb. 11, Colorado Legislature and the United States Senate passed a bill to have the seven-mile section named after Sgt. Maj. James Gregory “Ryan” Sartor. Sartor lost his life during combat in Faryab Province, Afghanistan, July 13, 2019. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 10th SFG (A) and developed a key relationship between his fellow teammates.
One of his old Soldiers said, “Men look up to Green Berets and Green Berets look up to Ryan Sartor. And that’s something when you have someone like that in your life.”
A few 10th SFG (A) Soldiers assigned to 1st Battalion, located in Stuttgart, Germany, traveled 5,000 miles for this special event. Two of the Soldiers were deployed with Sgt. Maj. Sartor and knew him personally.
“The only thing that you can do is honor his memory and it’s through living things that he thought was valuable, which was taking care everyone around you,” said a Soldier of Sgt. Maj. Sartor. “For us, we try to instill that emphasis on everyone around you. I know for certain Sartor would have loved to have been here to walk seven miles with us.”
