    10th Special Forces Group (Airborne)

FORT CARSON, Colo. -- Friends and Families watched as the Group Support Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) colors were passed from former commander, Lt. Col. Michael A. Hallinan, to Lt. Col. Ruben A. Rangel at Thorne Plaza on Fort Carson, June 7, 2023.

The ceremony formally marked Rangel's accession as the commander of Group Support Battalion.

During the ceremony, Col. Luke VanAntwerp, commander of 10th SFG(A), recognized Hallinan for his leadership skills during his time with Group Support Battalion.

"Lt. Col. Hallinan has served this battalion well, served this nation well, and always gets the mission done," said VanAntwerp. "He has been a peer, a voice of reason, and an adversary of drift."

VanAntwerp acknowledged Rangel as being the right replacement for Hallinan.

“Lt. Col. Rangel's reputation precedes him,” said VanAntwerp. “He’s the right man for the job…he was hired for his character and judgment, and I trust both of those things.”

Rangel was commissioned as a Transportation Officer through the Reserve Officers' Training

Corps at the University of Iowa. He was first assigned to the 801st Brigade Support Battalion at the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky where he served in assignments ranging from Platoon Leader to Company Commander. He would go on to command again in the Ranger Support Company at 1st Ranger Battalion at Hunter Army Airfield, Georgia. After his assignment at 1st Ranger Battalion, he was selected for the Joint Chiefs of Staff Internship and served in both the Office of the Secretary of Defense and Headquarters Department of the Army in the Pentagon. Rangel also previously served as the 10th SFG (A), Group Support Battalion Support Operations Officer.

“I am honored to take command in the Army's original Special Forces Group,” said Rangel. “It’s not something I take lightly, and I am proud to be amongst some of the most talented people in our Army and our Special Operations community."
