LAS VEGAS. – Green Berets assigned to the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) conducted Realistic Military Training (RMT) in Las Vegas, May 27- June 2, 2023, at multiple locations throughout the valley, designed to replicate real-world combat situations.
"The objective of this training was to bring the entirety of two assault teams together to complete missions," said the reconnaissance team sergeant with 10th SFG (A). "We needed to see how we are doing with time-sensitive targeting, target planning, and seeing the entire process from the very beginning to the return to base."
The Green Berets were immersed in a comprehensive and dynamic training environment. The exercise incorporated various challenging scenarios, including urban warfare, Vehicle Interdiction (VI), and stopping a dirty bomb maker.
Recognizing that combat situations often involve chaotic and unpredictable circumstances, RMT integrated intentional stressors. These stressors encompass a range of factors designed to challenge the Green Berets mentally, emotionally, and physically, replicating the intensity and adversity they may encounter in real-world scenarios.
"The stressors are to induce a critical thinking process, in either leadership or individuals," said the ground commander. "If there are no injections, they are basically playing paintball, and there is no training value to it."
According to the ground commander, the deliberate decision to select Las Vegas as the training environment was intended to introduce a deliberate stressor. Although the Green Berets had undergone training numerous times in familiar locations like Fort Carson or other military bases, the objective was to challenge them by engaging them in an entirely novel setting. It forced them to confront unfamiliar circumstances, requiring them to adapt and overcome challenges that couldn't be replicated by merely repeating regular training exercises.
During the training, the Green Berets worked with Las Vegas Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT); they shared different ideas and tactics to become a more efficient force. After the ranges, the SWAT team played a vital role as an Oppositional Force.
The reconnaissance team sergeant highlighted that the Las Vegas SWAT team is exceptionally active and consistently engaged in high-demand operations. Furthermore, he emphasized that the invaluable teachings imparted by this team extended beyond mere theoretical knowledge, encompassing practical skills derived from real-world experiences rather than conventional practices.
According to the ground commander from the 10th SFG (A), the Las Vegas SWAT team is unparalleled and familiar with the local structures, locations, and other intricacies foreign to them if they operate in a different country. This unique knowledge adds a significant level of realism to their training, requiring the commander's team to plan meticulously to compensate for the advantage the Las Vegas SWAT team holds in an operational environment due to their deep understanding of the area.
