Little Rock, Arkansas – A group of Tennessee National Guardsmen participated in this year’s Cyber Shield exercise held at the Professional Education Center in Little Rock, Ark. June 11-15, 2023.

The newly formed team actively participated in joint training sessions designed to equip them with the essential skills needed to effectively manage upcoming cyber security threats.

“The joint team came in not knowing each other,” Capt. Joshua Harr, blue team lead, 118th Communication Squadron, Nashville, Tennessee. “They are leaving and now have a clear picture of how exactly they fit in the mission of Tennessee.”

Each year, Cyber Shield introduces a fresh and distinctive exercise. Participants gain new skills and techniques that they can bring back to their units, enhancing their ability to defend military networks.

According to Harr, the exercise increases their effectiveness in responding to real-world operations and promotes the opportunities for others to join the National Guard.

The Tennessee National Guard is actively participating in collaborative exercises such as Cyber Shield 2023. Recently, Tennessee has also participated in local exercises such as Tennessee Maneuvers and Mountain ICE. In the future, Tennessee has been invited to participate for the first time in Lock Shields and Bright Star which are also joint exercises.

“Our goal is to bring both Army and Air personnel on these training visits to highlight the need for joint training and operations at our level,” says Lt. Col. Stephen Haley.

Cyber Shield is the longest running and largest Department of Defense unclassified cyber defense exercise. Approximately 800 National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, Coastguardsmen and civilian experts from around the world will participate during this year’s Cyber Shield exercise. This year marks Tennessee's tenth year of participation in the joint exercise, but the first time both Tennessee Air and Army have participated together.
