SMITHFIELD, Va. – Airmen and Soldiers from the Virginia National Guard volunteered as judges in the Virginia High School League’s 8th Annual Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Drill Competition March 11, 2023, at Smithfield High School in Smithfield, Virginia.

The schools in attendance included: Bethel High School, Caroline High School, Prince George High School, Hopewell High School, Courtland High School, Heritage High School, Thomas Dale High School, Northumberland High School, and Sussex High School. Because Smithfield High School was the host school, their Army JROTC Cadets conducted and led the event and each drill inspection category.

All Army and Navy JROTC cadets were rated in various categories such as inspection platoon, color guard, and armed and unarmed regulation.

“Overall, I think the competition was a great success,” said retired U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Marvin Hunter, Smithfield High School Army JROTC instructor. “Which I contribute to the efforts of my cadets and those participating schools here today; ensuring their teams were prepared and ready to go. They came in, executed and performed in an exceptional manner.”

“You can definitely tell [the cadets] did a lot and put a lot of hard work into [their performances],” said Tech. Sgt. Jacquelyn Montoya, 192nd Wing Medical Group nursing services non-commissioned officer in charge. “They definitely showed discipline in their movements and everything.”

Each drill team was evaluated by various active-duty and National Guard service members from both the Army and Air Force. The JROTC teams were awarded based on their overall scores with Heritage High School taking home first place.

“It was a phenomenal and rewarding experience to actually get to see the hard work of the cadets and the pride they took in what they did, and actually executing it,” said Master Sgt. Talia Ramsey, 192nd Wing Comptroller Flight military and civilian pay lead, who served as one of the judges during the armed regulation platoon event. “All of their practice led up to this and they did a phenomenal job.”

Additionally, the VANG recruiting teams were in attendance to inform cadets about the Guard and to consider it as a career option after high school. Tables were set up in the halls of the school for any students who were interested.

“It was a wonderful experience to see our children in action and then moreover for them to come to us for advice and guidance on their next career moves,” said Tech. Sgt. Anita Smith, 192nd Wing Comptroller Flight quality assurance manager who also served as a judge during the armed regulation platoon event. “[To hear] what they thought about the Guard and the insight that we were able to provide them is definitely something I would come back for.”
