“This is just an all-around fun day for me,” said 2nd Lt. Sayer Zimmerman, a signal officer with 10th Mountain Division Sustainment Brigade, after completing his third Sustainer of the Quarter competition.

Zimmerman and 52 other Soldiers from across 10th Mountain Division competed in 10th MDSB’s Sustainer of the Quarter Competition, June 13-14, on Fort Drum, New York. The Soldiers were challenged with tasks consisting of a Ranger Physical Fitness Test, a 12-mile ruck, a land navigation exercise, combat water survival training events, a stress shoot, and a competition board to claim the title of Sustainer of the Quarter.

“Every event has some kind of value,” Zimmerman said, “whether it’s knowing and pushing your limits, or a training value, like swimming or shooting.”

Out of the 53 competitors, only three Soldiers would become the Sustainer of the Quarter: an officer, a noncommissioned officer, and a junior enlisted Soldier. Winners in each of their respective categories were Zimmerman; Spc. Joseph Bridges, a Soldier with 59th Chemical Company, and Staff Sgt. Keith Pitts, a motor transport operator with 10th MDSB.

“I think I got some personal courage out of this competition,” Pitts said. “It got me to keep my head down, focus up, and get through.”

Pitts and Zimmerman have participated in the competition three times and Bridges for his second time. This was the first time any of the three Soldiers have won a title. Bridges will soon rotate to the Republic of Korea with his company; Pitts will soon change stations to Fort Stewart, Georgia, and Zimmerman will continue to serve as a signal officer in 10th MSDB on Fort Drum.

After receiving his award, Zimmerman took the time to thank the Soldiers who sponsored him for his participation in the competition.

“Something people don’t realize is that this really is a team sport,” Zimmerman said. “I wanted to shout out the Soldiers who sponsored me; it goes unnoticed, but they really helped me out.”

Zimmerman said that one of his primary motivations was to set an example for the Soldiers in his charge.

“I like winning for sure, but I also love showing my Soldiers anyone can do anything,” he said. “That’s what it’s really all about.”
