CAMP SMITH TRAINING SITE, New York -Camp Smith Training Site— A 150-year-old farmhouse that’s served as a lodging site at Camp Smith has been modernized and upgraded thanks to some hard work by members of the 1156th Engineer Company.
Building 90, which sits on the hill overlooking most of the Camp Smith buildings, was rebuilt inside an outside over the course of three years, according to Camp Smith’s director Tim Connors.
Since 2020, a team of four engineers from the 1156th, which specializes in construction, has worked to revamp the interior of the old house, and then redo the outside, he said.
The Soldiers got a chance to hone their military occupational skills and the camp got a refurbished building, Connors said.
The age of the building was apparent because of the massive beams which held up sections and the old construction techniques used over the years.
Before the rehab work, the building had three guest rooms and it now has five, Connors said.
Total cost of the materials for the project was $125,000, Connors said.
A formal ribbon cutting marking the end of the project was held by Major General Ray Shields, the adjutant general of New York, on June 14.
