SYRACUSE, NY – A father and son duo who serve together in the New York Air National Guard’s 174th Attack Wing got the chance to train together during a four-day exercise at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA April 18-21.
Senior Master Sgt. Anthony Scuderi, Installation Emergency Manager, and Airman 1st Class Elijah Scuderi, Client Systems Technician, participated in a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) exercise alongside other military members
This exercise was Airman 1st Class Scuderi’s first off-base exercise and he said he was excited yet nervous as he was not sure of what to expect.
“It was probably the best way to start off my first exercise,” said Airman 1st Class Scuderi. “It was nice having someone I knew there to talk to at first.”
Airman Scuderi lives at home with his family in the village of Chittenango. He said he joined the military because of his father. Sgt. Scuderi joined the military 20 years ago.
“I’m super excited that my son is here on the base,” said Sgt. Scuderi. “But on the flipside, everybody refers to him as the better Scuderi!”
Even though they said it’s rare they run into each other during the day, it’s nice to know they are close. When they are not at the 174th, the Scuderi’s enjoy spending their free time finding a new spot to kayak.
“As I'm getting close to the end of my career he's just starting,” said Sgt. Scuderi. It's an honor to see one of your children wear the uniform that you've worn for so long.”
Over 200 airmen and soldiers came together to successfully complete this in depth exercise and train for situations that could be disastrous. This specific exercise was similar to the response that would be needed after an earthquake, with people simulating being trapped in a collapsed building.
There were four different phases of the exercise consisting of preparation, mobilization, operation, and demobilization. During the preparation aspect is when the duo were able to work together to set up the Mobile Emergency Operations Center (MEOC). The MEOC was used for supervisors to be able to watch and track the exercise and be able to communicate to the airmen and soldiers.
Airmen Scuderi was able to provide communications assistance to the participating units by helping them with radio and technology issues while Sgt. Scuderi managed the MEOC.
“The best part about these exercises is we get to work with our Army counterparts and learn from each other,” said Senior Master Sgt. Scuderi. “If something were to happen in our region in New York, we already have relationships built which makes the response much easier.”
