WUNSTORF AIR BASE, Germany -- Nearly 60 Airmen from the Georgia Air National Guard deployed May 29, 2023, in support of German-led multi-national exercise, Air Defender 2023, which is being held through June 23 ,2023.
Airmen from the 165th Airlift Wing, GAANG, are playing a critical role in performing the tactical airlift mission required in the success of the two-week exercise.
“Our Airmen are experts when it comes to the tactical airlift mission and have mastered their skills to ensure mission completion in a variety of situations and locations,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Sheldon B. Wilson, 165th AW commander.
The tactical airlift mission, comprised of airborne transportation of supplies and equipment within a theater of operations, is mission specific to aircraft like the C-130 Hercules that Savannah Airmen have been flying for nearly five decades.
“A key objective of this exercise is to demonstrate air power alongside our allied and partner nations as well as promote our ability to merge our tactics with our allies and ensure if and when a threat is present, we can protect our own populations and armed forces,” said Wilson.
Airmen from the 165 AW are working alongside nearly 40 other Air National Guard units and collaborate with 24 NATO countries across several locations throughout the duration of the AD23, strengthening relationships and a clear commitment to ensuring Europe's security going into the future.
