Friends, family and members of the military community gathered at Redstone Arsenal's Bob Jones Auditorium 20 January to honor Bristol Tennessee native Col. Joseph Scott Anderson's 30 years of military service. He officially retired 29 May.
Anderson, a 1992 Graduate of East Tennessee State University, received his Regular Army commission as a Second Lieutenant in the Infantry. As an Infantry officer, he led tactical units in both the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky and the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Benning, Georgia.
He then became an Army Acquisition officer and held many positions of increasing responsibility including contingency contracting officer, assistant product manager and executive officer for the Deputy.
Assistant Secretary of the Army (Procurement), systems coordinator, and product manager.
From September 2014 to June 2015, he served in the U.S. Army Deputy Chief of Staff, G8, Program Analysis & Evaluation Directorate as a Senior Program Analyst. From July 2015 to June 2017, he served in a joint assignment as Director, Operational Integration Office, National Reconnaissance Office, Chantilly, Virginia. Anderson’s career culminated in Huntsville, Ala. From September 2018 to September 2022, he led the Project Management Office for Unmanned Aircraft Systems within the Program Executive Office for Army Aviation.
Col. Anderson’s overseas deployments included tours in Panama, Iraq, Kosovo.
Anderson earned numerous awards and decorations during his career including the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.
His civilian education includes a Master of Business Administration from the Naval Postgraduate School and Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania.
His professional military education includes the U.S. Army Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced courses.
The Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Army Acquisition Basic and Intermediate Courses, Executive Program Manager’s Course, and the U.S. Army Space Course.
