U.S. Army Spc. Simon Hammond, a member of the 273rd Military Police Company, District of Columbia Army National Guard, made the decision to serve in the military and gain U.S. citizenship after relocating from Southampton, United Kingdom. His motivation stems from a deep desire to positively impact the country he lives in.

"For me, joining the military was about being part of something greater, meeting great people, and engaging in meaningful mission work," said Hammond, reflecting on his motivation to enlist.

The pathway to citizenship program, in partnership with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), allows service members who have served honorably for at least one year to apply for U.S. citizenship through a streamlined process.

Hammond explained that the support he received as a service member during the naturalization process helped make the experience smoother. "The UCIS and the veterans involved were just super supportive. They pulled my paperwork and guided me through the process, thanking me for my service in the military," he said. Their involvement made a significant difference, making him feel welcomed and appreciated within the military community. It was reassuring to receive such support from fellow servicemembers who understood the unique challenges of both military service and the naturalization process. Their assistance and encouragement played a crucial role in facilitating a seamless transition to U.S. citizenship.

Balancing military service and the naturalization process presented its challenges, but Hammond had the support of his fellow battle buddies and military leadership. He expressed gratitude for their instrumental assistance: "The level of support I received from my unit and readiness personnel was exceptional. They helped me track my paperwork and expedite the process," he said. Their guidance created a feeling of teamwork and friendship, which made it easier for Hammond to believe this was the right choice.

Obtaining U.S. citizenship not only had a profound impact on Hammond's life, both personally and professionally, but it also provided him with a true sense of belonging. "The biggest thing for me is feeling like I'm actually at home now," he expressed. The sense of belonging that comes with citizenship has brought about a significant transformation in his life. Furthermore, his newly acquired citizenship has opened up numerous doors for him to advance in his civilian federal position. It has provided him with enhanced opportunities and possibilities for professional growth and development.

Eager to share his experience and the opportunities available, Hammond encourages anyone who has thought about joining the military to pursue their path towards citizenship through military duty. "I talk to people quite a lot, sharing my story at work and to my friends," he emphasized, highlighting the importance of informing others about the possibilities that lie ahead.

Hammond plans to make the most of his U.S. citizenship and military career. He acknowledges the distinct advantage of having great benefits, training and experience that the Army National Guard offers. He recognizes the significance of breaking free from his routine and loves the oppurtunity to venture wherever the Army requires of him, because with each mission he actively challenges himself, learns new skills, and gains life experiences. “Taking opportunities like these is crucial. I really enjoy the chance to do something different from my daily life," he said. By fully embracing these possibilities, Hammond hopes to maximize the value of his citizenship and military service.
