U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Jontarius Clay, a proud LGBTQ+ soldier serving in the human resource systems branch, District of Columbia Army National Guard, shared their experiences and insights while serving:
"My experience has honestly been an amazing and unique one. The family that I've grown in the Guard has been instrumental to my self-development and self-acceptance throughout the years," said Clay.
Reflecting on the significance of Pride Month, he feels that it is an opportunity for everyone to shine a light on a community that lives authentically and joyfully despite the challenges they face. He also highlights the importance of celebrating the black and brown trans women that were instrumental in the pride movement and the liberation of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Clay acknowledged facing unique challenges related to his LGBTQIA+ identity while serving. He experienced internal struggles primarily due to the old 'don't ask, don't tell' policy, which compelled him to isolate himself for safety reasons. Additionally, Clay was determined not to let his sexuality hinder his ability to succeed in the Guard
Clay is thankful for the unexpected love and support he has received from his fellow soldiers, and the community he has built has been nothing less than amazing, fostering a sense of appreciation within him for the support from the military community.
Clay expressed optimism while discussing LGBTQIA+ inclusion within the military, explaining that he felt the military is forever changing and progressing for the better.
"Go for it," Clay said, encouraging other LGBTQIA+ individuals contemplating a career in the military, particularly the Army National Guard. He would tell them to shine as bright as they dare to, emphasizing the incredible impact they can make by living in their truth and highlighting the importance of increased representation.
Envisioning the future of LGBTQIA+ representation and acceptance within the armed forces, Clay envisions the future of LGBTQIA+ representation and acceptance to continue growing and become normalized.
“I see myself continuing to live in my truth as I grow as a leader and mentor, fostering an environment of professional development and community” he said.
Staff Sgt. Jontarius Clay's experiences and perspectives serve as a testament to the progress and aspirations of LGBTQIA+ soldiers in the Army National Guard, shaping a future that embraces diversity, inclusion, and equality.
