MANDAN, N.D. — More than 300 North Dakota veterans and their family members will gather Saturday, Feb. 6 for the North Dakota American Legion's Annual Winter Conference. They will focus on the four pillars the Legion was founded on nearly a century ago: Americanism, Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, National Security and Children and Youth.
Saturday's opening general session begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Best Western Seven Seas in Mandan, N.D., and will bring together military‐relevant leadership from across the state. Following the session, the North Dakota Legion will host a press conference to allow for additional information and questions regarding the state of the Legion.
Saturday's opening speakers include:
• Col. Dale Adams, North Dakota National Guard director of the joint staff, providing a State of the North Dakota National Guard address
• Mrs. Connie Sprynczynatyk, North Dakota League of Cities executive director and a member if the Interservice Family Assistance Committee, speaking on North Dakota's Community Military Covenant
• Mr. Rob Keller, director of the North Dakota National Guard's Service Member and Family Support division, addressing the division's components, including the Outreach Team and what it has to offer veterans
• Staff Sgt. Amy Wieser Willson, North Dakota American Legion Veterans Affairs & Rehabilitation Committee member, discussing the Legion's usage of social media to supplement a PTSD/suicide awareness campaign titled Courage Carries On, as well as new venues for the Legion's use of social media
• North Dakota American Legion Auxiliary President Gigi Moore providing an update on the Auxiliary
• North Dakota American Legion Commander Jerry Samuelson giving the State of the Department address
The conference begins at 7 p.m. Friday with greetings from Mandan Mayor Tim Helbling, Post Commander Anton Engelhardt, Unit Auxiliary President Mary Boehm, National Auxiliary President Rita Navarreté and National Vice Commander Eugene Schumacher.
Other highlights of the conference on Saturday include the Press Association Luncheon, during which the North Dakota American Legion Press Association Award is presented to a North Dakota individual or group who has made major accomplishments in publicizing or promoting any of the many fields in which the American Legion is interested and active, and the Oratorical Contest featuring prepared orations by four high school finalists from across the state.
