SAN DIEGO – U.S. Navy tactical aircraft squadrons will conduct six flyovers in six cities across the West Coast and in Texas, including an all-women flyover in Pebble Beach, Calif., in support of the U.S. Women’s Open Golf Championship and Macy’s 4th of July Celebration, July 4.

The flyover in Pebble Beach commemorates 50 years of women flying in the U.S. Navy. In 1973 the first eight women began flight school in Pensacola, Fla., and one year later six of those eight women, titled "The First Six,” earned their Wings of Gold. Since then, women have served, operated and led at every level of Naval Aviation.

The flyover formation will include one CMV-22B Osprey from the “Mighty Bisons” of Fleet Logistics Multi-Mission Squadron (VRM) 40, an F/A-18F Super Hornet from the “Black Aces” of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 41, and an MH-60S Sea Hawk from the “Chargers” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 14. These aircraft represent the strike and support capabilities of the “Carrier Air Wing of the Future,” providing advanced technology and enhanced flexibility to our military combat commanders. VRM-40 and HSC-14 are based at Naval Air Station (NAS) North Island, Calif., and VFA-41 is based at NAS Lemoore, Calif.

Additional flyovers to be conducted on the 4th of July includes Chief of Naval Air Training Command’s Training Air Wing (TRAWING) Four flyover in support of the local Corpus Christi, Texas Mayor’s “Big Bang” Celebration, a flyover of the San Diego Padres’ PETCO Park for their game versus the Los Angeles Angels, conducted by the “Flying Eagles” of VFA-122 and the “Sharpshooters” of Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron (VMFAT) 101, and two EA-18G Growlers from the “Patriots” of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 140 flyovers in support of Oak Harbor, Port Angeles and Anacortes, Wash. 4th of July celebrations.

TRAWING Four is based at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas, while VFA-122 is based in NAS Lemoore, Calif. and VMFAT-101 is based at Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar, Calif. VAQ-140 is based out of NAS Whidbey Island, Wash.

The CMV-22B Osprey is the Navy’s long-range/medium-lift element of the intra-theater aerial logistics capability. Responsible for the carrier onboard delivery mission, the CMV-22B fulfills the Joint Force Maritime Component Commander (JFMCC) time-critical logistics air connector requirements by transporting personnel, mail and priority cargo from advance bases to the carrier.

Entering fleet service in 1999, the F/A-18 Super Hornet continuing its key strike fighter role against the advanced threats of the 21st century. Designed to meet current Navy fighter escort and interdiction mission requirements, the Super Hornet maintains fleet air defense and close air support roles, as well as an increasing range of missions, including in-air refueling.

The MH-60S Seahawk missions include anti-surface warfare, combat support, humanitarian disaster relief, combat search and rescue, medical evacuation, special operations and airborne mine countermeasures.

The EA-18G Growler is a variant in the F/A-18 family of aircraft that combines the proven Super Hornet platform with a sophisticated electronic warfare suite that performs a variety of functions including communications jamming and countermeasures.
