Evans Army Community Hospital’s laboratory recently had the chance to showcase its capabilities during a College of American Pathologists (CAP) inspection and an Association for the Advancement of Blood & Biotherapies (AABB) inspection.

During the CAP Inspection, an eight-member inspection team evaluated the lab’s testing sections, earning the lab a two-year accreditation and high praise from the inspectors for the lab’s performance.

The AABB inspection evaluated the Blood Bank/Transfusion section, during which the inspector spent two days reviewing policies and procedures. These inspection results also earned high praise from the inspector and a two-year accreditation with AABB.

“Thank you to all the members of the EACH Pathology Team for showing how great you are each and every day with the hard work you put in to serve our patients,” said 1st Lt. Adam Heard, deputy laboratory manager. “Multiple inspectors commented on the friendly team environment and stated that they would be honored to work in such a facility.”

Earning CAP Laboratory Accreditation helps laboratories maintain accuracy of test results and ensure accurate patient diagnosis, according to Heard.

“CAP requirements commonly exceed the standards, bolstering patient care and safety,” said Heard. “This helps us to manage rapidly evolving changes in laboratory medicine and technology, and exchange ideas and best practices among our pathology and laboratory medicine peers.”

Heard says the AABB inspection usually occurs every two years, also, and in conjunction with the CAP inspection. The inspection ensures laboratories are following safe practices when it comes to administering Blood Products.
