Story by Rachel Martinez, M. Ed, Assistant Campus Director, Sigonella Campus
The Sigonella Graduation Recognition Ceremony held May 19, 2023, in the NAS 1 Chapel, was a momentous occasion that celebrated the achievements of 26 graduates from five universities. Hosted by the Sigonella Education Center, the ceremony brought together proud graduates, their families, and distinguished guests to commemorate their remarkable accomplishments while living and serving overseas.
The ceremony provided an opportunity for graduates, families and friends to come together in celebration. The sense of accomplishment and pride was palpable in the air as each graduate received their well-deserved recognition for their hard work and perseverance. The milestone not only marked the end of one chapter but also signified the beginning of new and exciting opportunities for these exceptional individuals.
The event was honored to have Base Commander Captain Aaron Shoemaker, who delivered an inspiring keynote speech. Captain Shoemaker expressed his deep honor in sharing this special day with the graduates and emphasized his exceptional pride in their accomplishments. Recognizing the unique challenges of pursuing higher education while being stationed abroad, he acknowledged the graduates' resilience and determination.
Addressing the graduates, Captain Shoemaker encouraged them, stating “The only difference between a challenge and an opportunity is perspective. May you leave here today with an eye that can discern the opportunity in every challenge that you face.”
Air Traffic Controller 1st Class Mackenzie McCann, who received a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, shared the biggest lesson she learned, “Almost all of your classmates are experiencing the same fears, distractions, uncertainties, and difficulties that you are. It’s more than alright to share those experiences and ask for help from one another.”
Looking back on his time as a student, Tech. Sgt. Chad Scruggs cites that “resilience and determination” mentioned by Captain Shoemaker as his most valuable lesson learned. “There were times when I wanted to quit. Luckily, I have a lovely wife who pushed me through those times. So few serve, even fewer receive a degree,” said Scruggs.
Scruggs received a Master of Science in Acquisition and Contract Management from the University of Maryland, Global Campus.
With heartfelt congratulations to the graduates and gratitude for their service, the Sigonella Graduation Recognition Ceremony was a truly memorable event that acknowledged their academic achievements while honoring their dedication to their country and community. It served as a reminder of the remarkable accomplishments that can be achieved with determination, resilience, and the unwavering support of family and friends.
