Story by Sgt. Edward Lee Task Force Southern Castle Public Affairs Representative NCOIC
Command Sgt. Maj. John T. Raines, 13th Command Sergeant Major of the Army National Guard, visited service members at Camp Buehring, Kuwait, where he hosted a town hall meeting to address questions or concerns for those that were selected to attend. Raines military career began in August 1989, and over an almost 34-year span of his career he served in both the Army National Guard and the United States Army. He deployed to Iraq in support of Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also deployed all around South Asia and the Pacific.
The National Guard Bureau senior enlisted advisor visited the majority of the National Guard units deployed to Camp Buehring and discussed his career progression throughout the military during his visit and town hall meeting.
There are multiple moving parts regarding Raines' assignment as the Command Sergeant Major of the Army National Guard. The unique way he showcased it was to have five service members on stage. There were two on each side and were tasked with lifting a single service member and following commands, moving as one from one end of the stage to the other. Then, three individuals held one up and performed the same commands. After, two individuals held up one person, and finally one person held up another. The message conveyed that, in the military, we must move as one. The job is more manageable when everyone does what is needed.
Following his discussion with the Soldiers, he recognized Soldiers from Camp Buehring who participated in the Best Squad Competition. Staff Sgt. Joshua Hutchings and Sgt. Douglas Woods, and Spc. Anthony Hill from Boise, Idaho; Spc. Christian Brown of Filer, Idaho; and Spc. David Hann of Colorado Springs, Colorado; all represented Charlie Company, 2-116th Combined Arms Battalion (CAB) during the competition.
Service members also had the opportunity to a question-and-answer session with Raines. Questions varied from the importance of the Army National Guard regarding functionality and capacity in overseas operations to how often rotations for deployment will come around, and even the possibility of age requirements to start drawing retirement. At the conclusion of the town hall, service members walked away with more knowledge and a different level of comfort moving forward into their careers in the Army National Guard.
