ATLANTA - The Marine Corps Recruiting Command and the American School Counselor Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting excellence in school counseling, recently partnered to host the ASCA annual conference from July 15 to July 18, 2023.

Through this partnership Marine Corps Recruiting Command aims to highlight the crucial role that school counselors play in shaping the lives of young individuals and to share the history of the Marine Corps. The partnership also allows Marines to engage with school counselors and talk about how joining the Marine Corps can benefit their students and positively impact their lives from a personal, educational, and professional standpoint.

“I think this partnership is mutually beneficial,” said Lt. Col. Micah Miller, the reserve judge advocate attached to Camp Lejeune Base Legal. “These counselors deal with our talent pool for recruiting every day, and not every kid is going to go or wants to go to college, so we provide a great alternative that will set these kids up, educationally and professionally, for life.”

The annual conference serves as a platform for school counselors to gather, exchange ideas and enhance their professional development. With the Marine Corps involvement, the conference offered attendees a unique opportunity to engage with Marines and learn about the various career paths and opportunities the Marine Corps provides.

“Our goal as school counselors is to help set up our students to have a better future,” said Amanda Anderson, a counselor from Salt Lake City, Utah. “Not every student is going to go to college or wants to go to college right away, so I believe the military is a great choice for those students to set them up for a bright future.”

The Marine Corps National Partnership program engages educators, coaches, and school administrators in an effort to increase awareness of the Marine Corps and galvanize recognition that the Marine Corps purpose aligns with the partnering organizations' own purpose. These partnerships are initiated, planned, and activated to inspire influencers to provide recruiter access to qualified men and women.

“We are thrilled to partner with the ASCA and support their efforts in recognizing the exceptional work of school counselors,” said U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Aaron Webster, the community engagement officer for the Marine Corps Recruiting Command. “School counselors play a vital role in shaping the future of our nation, and we are proud to stand alongside them and support their mission.”
