    1st Marine Division

U.S. Marines and Sailors from the 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Pendleton, Calif., deployed to Australia on July 17 to participate in exercise Talisman Sabre 23.

The exercise, which takes place July 22 – August 4, allows 1st MARDIV to test their abilities in planning and conducting combined and joint operations and to improve combat readiness and interoperability between 1st MARDIV, the Australian Defence Force, and other Allied and partnered forces. This is the first time the division’s headquarters element has deployed to the continent in more than 75 years. The deployment reinforces the U.S. Marine Corps’ commitment to the U.S. and Australian alliance.

"It's a tremendous opportunity for 1st Marine Division Headquarters to deploy back to Australia for the first time in over 75 years and to participate in this exercise which will strengthen the relationship with our Australian counterparts. Bilateral exercises such as Talisman Sabre help build trust and interoperability with key allies, such as Australia, through shared experiences and tough, realistic training.” said U.S. Marine Maj. Gen. Benjamin T. Watson, commanding general, 1st Marine Division.

The combined team will rehearse command and control, tactical coordination of forces, and communication to enhance lethality and interoperability between Allied forces during the large-scale exercise.

"We must be ready to deploy and fight together at a moment's notice. This exercise is the perfect opportunity to rehearse rapidly deploying forward from Camp Pendleton and linking up with our Australian Allies to respond to future crisis or contingency," Watson said.

Talisman Sabre is the largest bilateral military exercise between Australia and the United States, advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific by strengthening relationships and interoperability among key allies and enhancing our collective capabilities to respond to a wide array of potential security concerns.
