Specialist Lauren Gajeton has made her way from an at-large Esports athlete to Fort Knox to officially join the Esports permanent team.

Originally from North Carolina, SPC Gajeton, joined the Army in 2021, with a goal of earning money for higher education. After completing Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, SPC Gajeton was stationed at Fort Gordon in Georgia, now called Fort Eisenhower. With a designated military occupational specialty (MOS) in veterinary health food inspector and public health food inspector, SPC Gajeton oversees food safety, quality assurance, and protection from unintentional or intentional contamination of food consumed by Soldiers.

A longtime fan of competitive online gaming, SPC Gajeton, began using her down time to advance her skills in Rocket League, a sport-based competitive title often described as “soccer with cars.” Rocket League features three players per team, in a competitive game mode based on teamwork.

After competing as an at-large athlete for the Army’s Esports team for a year, SPC Gajeton officially made the team. She arrived at Fort Knox in July 2023 as an E4 and Grand Champion Division One competitor in her title. “What I love most about online esports competition is being able to compete and show off new skills.” Gajeton stated. “Teammates become friends and that makes it even more fun.” When asked about being the only female on the official Esports team, Gajeton jokingly says, “It’s like having a family of all annoying brothers!”

SPC Gajeton has plans to pursue a master’s degree in marketing after obtaining her bachelor’s degree in biotechnology. She credits and is thankful for the Army’s role in aiding her education pursuits as well as allowing her to serve her country and pursue her passion for competitive online gaming. “I really enjoy my job as a soldier and a competitive athlete. Everyone should take advantage of what opportunities are available in the Army.” SPC Gajeton’s husband is also a US Army Soldier, stationed alongside her at Fort Knox. They have been married for two years.
