Soldiers from 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division executed situational training exercise lanes July 20, on Fort Drum, New York. The lanes validated the unit's ability to conduct basic scout skills, such as conducting reconnaissance and gathering information, at the lowest level.
“We’re evaluating our newly promoted team leaders and seeing how they do in dismounted operations in a reconnaissance platoon,” said 1st Lt. Peter Cimino, leader of 2nd Platoon, Banshee Troop, 3-71 Cav. “It’s an evaluation and culmination of what these guys have been doing for the past couple of weeks, specifically their basic Soldier and scout skills.”
Each STX lane featured a different training focus that Banshee Troop rotated through, covering basic Soldier skills like developing camouflage and scout tasks like conducting silent movement and the skills necessary to do so.
“We’ve broken it down into three phases: movement, reporting, and actions on the objective,” Cimino said. “Things like moving through the woods silently, using hand and arm signals as your primary point of communication while moving to an objective, and executing accurate navigation and reports in that situation.”
Cimino then emphasized how important these types of exercises are to developing teams at the lowest level and creating a combat-capable force.
“This builds that trust that's needed,” Cimino said. “If we’re going to a named area of interest or having to move on an objective, we need that trust built to be able to look at a team leader and a team and know that they’ll get that job done efficiently and without any hindrance.”
Sgt. Johnathan Summers, one of the team leaders being evaluated from Banshee Troop, said that the movement portion of the STX lanes was especially vital to learn from during the exercise.
“It’s not too big of an actual movement in scale, but at the same time, it’s incredibly realistic to our level as team leaders during a dismounted coordination,” he said.
Summers stated why he believes training like this matters to make a difference in a combat scenario and build tactically and technically proficient teams and Soldiers ready for that situation.
“This is all designed to validate that we can control our teams in these scenarios and that when it comes time to execute, we can actually maneuver and answer issues on the battlefield for our commander,” he said.
