SAVANNAH AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ga.-- The new state-of-the-art 5th generation fighter aircraft maintenance hangar, that has been under construction since the initial groundbreaking in February 2021, is officially complete and ready for use at the Savannah Combat Readiness Training Center here as of July 11.

The addition of the new building, a 24-million-dollar military construction project, is a similar floor plan modeled after Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam’s hangar in Hawaii and is large enough to store multiple sized aircraft, up to 5 F-22s or F-35s, with the maximum size to fit a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III.

“This is a really exciting time for us right now because we’ve been waiting on this hangar for over two years,” said the commander of the CRTC, or Air Dominance Center, Lt. Col. Stephen “Tracker” Thomas. “It will be great for the Airmen coming in for training in the next few months to be able to put the hangar to use after all this time.”

According to GAANG documented history, the main hangar was built in 1940s and was designed to shelter the bombers of that period.

Thomas said that as construction of the new hangar has been in-progress, Airmen from visiting units have been using their old hangar that is over 80 years old and lacks many of the requirements needed to effectively work on 4th and 5th generation aircraft.

“We have faced a lot of uncertainty over the past couple years with our facility potentially closing down, so it feels great to have the keys in hand and to know that this project will see the light of day going forward with many more training exercises to come,” said Thomas.

Thomas said an official ribbon cutting is in its planning stages and more details on that will be released later.

“We’re very fortunate we had great support from our congressional representatives, state leadership and the local community to keep this project going” Thomas said. “It will be nice to turn these buildings over to the aircraft maintenance folks that come in from visiting units so they can ensure these jets are safe and flying to their best ability.”
